Postdoctoral Fellowship in Patient Engagement

Overview
Dr. Abhimanyu Sud, Research Chair in Primary Care and Population Health Systems, is looking for a talented postdoctoral research fellow in an area of patient engagement in pain research. Dr. Sud’s research focuses on complex the intersections of chronic pain, mental illness and opioid use, across various levels of health and social systems. PEPR (https://www.pepr-partnership.org/) is a 5-year, multi-disciplinary, multi-sector, multi-province project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada that will build sustainable connections and generate new insights regarding meaningful engagement that better reflect the needs and knowledges of people with lived experience of chronic pain and marginalization through principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), and work toward improving social and health equity.
Research & Training Goals
With the support of Dr. Sud and a diverse team of co-investigators, including people with living and lived experience of pain, the postdoctoral fellow will develop and lead a line of critical social science scholarship focused on the topics of patient engagement and qualitative evidence in pharmaceutical and medical device regulation and pricing in Canada, with a particular focus on pain-related therapeutics.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD (at the time the fellowship begins) in a relevant area, such as health services research, sociology, pain / rehabilitation sciences or a related discipline. Applicants must be able to demonstrate an excellent track record of research experience and publications in the areas of patient engagement and qualitative research.
Responsibilities
- Develop new lines of research in collaboration with the supervising Research Chair which align with the goals of the Research Chair’s pillar and with the Research Strategy of Humber River Health
- Engage with appropriate hospital stakeholders related to research studies
- Contribute to the drafting of research grant applications
- Independently prepare research study designs and ethics protocols
- Collect, clean, and analyze study data; interpret study findings
- Knowledge translation of research findings and sharing of results with appropriate stakeholder communities, including clinical staff, senior management, patients/families, broader clinical and research communities
- Lead the drafting of manuscripts, prepare them for submission to journals, and respond to reviewer comments
- Routine administrative work related to carrying out a research study
- Publishing articles in peer-review journals
- Participate in peer-review committees (journals, granting agencies)
- Attend and present research findings at academic conferences
- Contribute to the growth and development of Humber’s research program by delivering workshops, presentations, rounds, and other learning opportunities
- Participate in the training, supervision and mentorship of junior staff, practicum students, interns and/or volunteers, building capacity within the organization

Reporting to the Executive Vice-President, Chief Nursing & Chief of Clinical Programs, the Program Director, Medical Imaging provides strategic leadership oversight for the delivery of care within the Medical Imaging portfolio (Breast Health, General and Interventional Radiology, MRI, Ultrasound, CAT-Scan and Nuclear Medicine) aligning with the corporate goals and objectives.

- Make significant contributions to the design of research studies to answer questions and solve complex research problems.
- Provide subject matter expertise on various research methodologies (i.e., evidence synthesis, clinical trials, policy analysis, qualitative research)

- Develop, review, and evaluate research proposals, including their feasibility.
- Work with Research Chair and relevant co-investigators to develop viable research project ideas and to turn them into well-designed research studies

- Will communicate with vendors (Baxter, Fresenius, Nxstage) and assist and coordinate the ordering of home dialysis supplies.
- Must have knowledge of all types of dialysis machines, including the reverse osmosis system, and be able to perform the set-up, chemical cleaning, and sterilization steps.
- Will monitor, track, and manage medical supplies inventory in the units and clinics.
Requirements:
- A high school diploma or equivalent required.
- Two (2) years recent experience in Dialysis required.
- Completion of a Dialysis Assistant course an asset.
- Must have demonstrated ability to read and understand basic medical terminology, concepts of sterility and aseptic technique.
- Must have demonstrated ability to assemble equipment for a specific task or function.
- Ability and willingness to learn, understand, and follow basic technical concepts as they relate to complex electronic and hydraulic system operations. Ability to understand and problem solve issues related to medical equipment and its safe use in the Hemodialysis Unit.
- Must have basis knowledge of infection control principles. Must have demonstrated organizational, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
- Must be physically able to perform duties requiring heavy exertion (lifting, pushing, pulling).
- Must be able to walk/stand for extended periods of time.

- Provides effective, efficient and safe patient services through human, financial, and environmental resource management.
- Supports a model of patient centered care that is based on best practice, program and corporate standards, and continuous quality improvement.
- Builds a professional practice climate and facilitates an interdisciplinary approach to patient care.
- Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders and community partners to plan, implement and monitor delivery of patient and family centered programs and services.
- Provides leadership in advancing the goals and objectives of the Birthing Unit within the organization and supports the program and organization’s strategic priorities.
- Coaches and mentors staff to navigate successfully through change.
- Manages all aspects of employee relations including recruitment, retention, attendance and performance management in collaboration with Human Resources and Labour Relations.

Requirements:

Position Responsibilities:
- Providing therapeutic, diagnostic and respiratory services.
- Ensuring the efficient delivery of respiratory services.
- Continually evaluating the effectiveness of therapies given to patients.
- Knowledge and experience with ventilation (invasive and noninvasive), airway management and spirometry, arterial blood gas collection, art line insertion, endotracheal intubation/ extubation, home oxygen assessment, required.
- Other relevant duties as assigned by management or Clinical Coordinator.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of a recognized School of Respiratory Therapy required.
- NRP, & BCLS certification required.
- A member in good standing with the C.R.T.O is required.
- A member of R.T.S.O and C.S.R.T. preferred.
- 2 years acute care hospital experience preferred.
- Evidence of sound organizational, problem solving and prioritization skills with ability to work well in a fast paced environment.
